M-Jali Capability Statement
The demand for high quality health information – for health sector planning, management, monitoring, and evaluation has increased steadily over recent decades. A rapid expansion in the use of technology in Africa has seen 63% mobile penetration with countries like Kenya having 86%.
To contribute to quality health information systems in the country, Amref Health Africa developed an innovative solution – Mobile Jamii Afya Link (m-JALi) for improving eciency of health reporting at community level. It incorporates a mobile application for capturing data from the household level and transmitting it online to a web-based database, which is currently linked to the National District Health Information System (DHIS2). The goal of this innovation is to improve health indicators by facilitating timely, accurate, and complete data for enabling decision making and appropriate action, from the community level to the formal health system level and County and National level. Currently the innovation is actively in use in three Counties in Kenya by 1,800 CHVs who have reached 191,438 households with a population of 612,214 persons registered and currently tracked on monthly basis. The application is DHIS2-compliant, enhancing nationwide dissemination of health information from Community Health Units.
Mobile-Jamii Afya Link (M-Jali) is Amref Health Africa’s innovative solution for improving collection, analysis and dissemination of community data. It incorporates a mobile application for capturing data from the household level and transmitting it to a web-based database. M-Jali runs on Android platform and has been developed for use by Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) to capture data as per the specications of the Community Health Strategy Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) structure. It enhances timeliness and exibility of data capture at community level by facilitating both online (real time) and oine (for areas with network challenges) capturing of data and submitting online to the online backend database. The platform is up to date in conformity with the latest changes to the data collection tools.
The data is output through a web portal which enables data validation, report generation and information sharing. The goal of this innovation is to improve health indicators by facilitating timely, accurate, and complete data for decision making and action. The platform also includes capabilities of incorporating more health functions beyond the CHS tools as has been evidenced in the inclusion of data capture for screening of hypertension and diabetes, Community Based Disease Surveillance and NHIF registration.
M-JALi captures population data, demographics and health status information based on a variety of data collection platforms and frameworks.
Interactive Push and Pull
M-Jali incorporates interactive push and pull for notifying health workers in the event of attention-demanding information like referral, outbreak and outrageous values of indicators.
The platform is integrates broadcast functionality for announcements and alerts to CHVs, including data update/ reporting reminders.
We support linkage and transmission of data to other external platforms that exist in the health and other development sectors.
