Our Experience

Mobile Jamii Afya Link (M-Jali) is a well though-out and developed solution resulting from years of experience in improving community health. We started with a small pilot covering 3 sub locations in Kibwezi where village volunteers would collect data on prescribed registers, input into a Microsoft® Access® database, then a few graphs would be plotted to be presented in village barazas, which were the equivalent of dialog days before the Community Health Strategy was introduced

Our Solution

M-Jali adds value to the management of community health information by addressing three key information attributes that are necessary for information to be useful and purposeful - timeliness, accuracy and completeness .

Timeliness

In contrast with the traditional paper-based methods, data is collected on mobile and is instantly accessible on a web portal.

Accuracy

Stringent inbuilt validation mechanisms ensures that data is captured accurately and invalid entries are flagged before submission

Completeness

While capturing data, the platform ensures all entries are completed and no gaps prior to submission for analysis

From a simple CHW app to a versatile global platform

In 2013, we started a journey to enhance flexibility of data capture and transmission by Community Health Workers (CHWs). With advancement in technology, smart phones were becoming more widely available and affordable. The success saw 350 CHWs in Makueni County spearhead improvement of health status by actively monitoring health indicators at household level. This is accomplished in 4 simple steps:

  • A CHW collects data from the household on a mobile device
  • Data is submitted and stored in a cloud-based database
  • Health workers and managers view reports and summaries on a web portal
  • Community dialog and decisions are made based on timely tangible evidence
